hydro generator
for every sailing boat

The Innovative Hydrogenerator

The Ocean Power hydro generator is based on Ocean Power's patented concept of eliminating critical components  (Patent Nr. 10 2017 100 485):

  • no dynamic seal
  • no oil filling
  • no brushes
  • therefore no maintenance!

Unique. Exclusive.  Only at Ocean Power!

Lightweight and friction-free suspension. Easy to deploy and retrieve while sailing!

The hydro generator slides on a removable rail. With just one rope, the generator is deployed and retrieved while sailing. The integrated bungee mechanism in the sliding rail prevents the generator from falling uncontrollably and assists in retrieving.

It's never been easier to deploy and retrieve a hydrogenerator while sailing! Even at high speeds and in rough weather!

charges from 3kts

easy to set

while underway

maintenance free

The Ocean Power advantages for you:

  • generator runs nearly frictionless, therefore the power of the propeller is transmitted to the battery with very high efficiency
  • no dynamic seals means a minimum of wear and no maintenance
  • Easy to set and retrieve - even at high speed. No need to slow down (see video below)
  • safe and easy deployment and retrieval from the cockpit - Safety First!
  • charging starts at only 3 knots (100 Watt bei ca. 5 kn)

The electrical machine:

  • is a permanent magnet synchronous generator,
  • its magnets feature the highest energy density,
  • the stator winding is fully encapsulated and cooled by seawater both internally and externally.

The housing of this hydrogenerators is only 63 mm in diameter and extremely slim.

The design of the efficient and silent propeller has been geared to tidal power plants.

Furhter features:

  • available for 12V and 24V
  • custom length available on request
  • robust rubber cable (min. 5 m long)
  • waterproof Controller to IP 67  (optionally with Bluetooth connection)
  • various propeller designs (made of carbon fibre) available for different speed ranges
  • easy to disassemble and reassemble if required - e.g. during longer periods of absence, the hydrogenerator can be conveniently stowed below deck
  • optionally available with "Crash-Device" - in the event of a collision, the generator automatically swings backwards
  • compatible with any stern shape!

Vertical Transom

Description This concerns an almost vertical stern. The small deviation in angle was compensated in this case using appropriate spacers between the sliding rail and the generator.

By installing two sets of brackets, the generator can alos be shifted to the leeward side while underway.
Special feature Mounted directly nex to the wind steering system.

Negative Transom

Description Here is an extremely raked stern. The image shows the old mounting with two tubes, which has been replaced by the sliding rail. The principle remains the same: the generator is brought into a vertical position using a small mini-boom (here made of carbon).

Positive Transom

Description A slight positive angle can be compensated using spacers between the sliding rail and the generator. The photo shows the previous version.

Stepped Transom

Description The Ocean Power hydro generator requires very little space installation - stepped transoms are no problem for us!

The generator is brought into a vertical position using a small mini-boom.

The mounting of the rotation axis (vertical bearings) can also be done horizontally.

Canoe Stern

Description The position of the rotation axis on the sliding rail can be adjusted. In this case, the rotation axis was mounted at the top. Using a line attached to the bottom of the generator, the unit is held in a vertical position. This concept is suitable for canoe sterns as well as extremely raked positive transoms.

Swim Platform

Description In this case, the swim platform prevented direct mounting of the generator on the stern. Here, the rotation axis of the generator was attached to the platform's tube.
The clever part The generator and sliding rail can be removed without tools, allowing the swim platform to continue being used in the anchorage.

What Our Customers Say

Kevin Le Podevin

Participant Global Solo Challenge 2023/24

Roaring Fourty - Open 40

"...I installed the Ocean Power system, so it was inclined at an angle of 15 degrees. The hull design heel is about 20 degrees and the daggerboard is inclined at 15 degrees,  so the generator was near vertical in operation when going to windward or downwind. Drag was barely noticeable.
Amperage output was regularly exceeded the boats required electrical budget to operate instruments and autopilot, ballast pumps and laptop charging, There were periods where I would only run the engine once per week as a preventative maintenance and safety activity. ..."

"... and best of all still works fantastic after 4 years. I will use it again in the GGR26
I mainly use it when the boat is at 6 knots + as it doesn't affect my speed. When needed I will use it at slower speeds, makes very little different to my speed then but I am racing. It was easy to install, it's great to know that my batteries will always be charged up..."

"Ocean Power hydrogenerator now completed 2000nm powering Carlotta electricly.
It's simply fantastic! Not missed a beat. For a 72hr passage in auto 20hrs a day and with 2x fridges running we never ran an engine or generator, it's a game changing for us. "

Cruising Sailor

".....at ideal 4 - 5 Bft and 5 - 8 kts speed through the water and slightly discharged batteries. In short - I'm thrilled!!! - in every sense! At around 7 kts, approx. 13 A charging current! The handling is even easier than I had imagined. Hardly any force is required to lower the generator, the same when pulling up.  At 5kts I could hear a very quiet whirring noise, which was drowned out by other noises at higher speeds. No vibrations are transmitted to the hull. Mounting the rail on the 2 brackets on the starboard or port side is just as quick as mounting the generator on the rails themselves.  ..."

Cayenne - Dragon Fly 920 Extreme

"With my Dragon Fly 920 Extreme, I usually sail single-handed about 2,000-2,5000 nautical miles in the Baltic Sea, Kattegat, and Skagerrak. Friends and my wife visit me during the summer. The outboard motor and solar panel cannot cover my power needs. With my nearly 8-meter-wide boat, I mostly anchor, so shore power is not an option.

For the past four years, I've been using the Ocean Power Hydrogenerator, and since then I've had sufficient electrical energy on board - even the freezer runs continously."
